By Devorah Vineburg How Can Families: Spend meaningful time together? Teach children new skills and self-confidence? Help non-profit organizations meet social needs? Instill positive values in the community? AND HAVE FUN ALL AT THE SAME TIME? VOLUNTEER AS A FAMILY! What is considered a family? Everyone is considered family! Volunteering as a family group does not mean that you have to conform to the traditional model of "mom, dad, and 2 kids!" Today's family dynamics are changing, and the volunteer scene has adapted to make the most of getting you together with anyone who is significant to you to help better our communities. So, who is considered a family volunteer? Two parents with a teenager A single mother with a toddler and first grader A retired couple Four college roomates A grandfather with a seventh grade grandson A mentor with a fourth grade mentee An extended family with cousins, aunt and uncles. What are some ways that families can volunteer? - Every family member performs the same activity at the
same time. - Family members go to a site together, but perform
different tasks. - A family becomes in a long-term project and rotates the
family member who participates each week/month. - Part of a family volunteers together (brother and sister,
mother and son, etc.) - A family works on a take-home project at their own
convenience. - An extended family volunteers for a group project
(cousins, friends, etc.) - Families volunteer with other families from their
workplace, school, neighborhood or religious group. - Groups of families meet on a regular basis in order to
perform community service together. How can families serve the community? Plant a tree for Arbor Day or Earth Day. Collect food to donate to a local food pantry. Beautify a park by picking up trash and painting picnic
tables. Sell concessions at a fundraising event. Help assemble science curriculum kits for local schools. Make a party for residents at a local healthcare facility. Help rake an elderly persons yard. Help to maintain the collection of a local museum. Help out at the local library. Write holiday letters to servicemen overseas. In all cases, it is assumed that children younger than
High School age will be supervised by an adult with whom
they volunteer. Want more ideas for local projects to do with your family members? Call 1-800-VOLUNTEER to be connected to a Volunteer Center in your local area.
